Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing gives independent authors access to ebook distribution and print on demand without ordering a warehouse of books. The upload is accessible; producing a book readers trust still requires editorial and technical judgement.

KDP interfaces, specifications and royalty terms change. Treat this as a production framework and verify current details inside KDP before making decisions.

Choose the editions before preparing files

An ebook, paperback and hardcover are related products, not one interchangeable file. Reflowable ebooks adapt to a reader's screen. Print interiors use fixed pages, trim, margins and binding allowances. Each print format also changes manufacturing cost and cover geometry.

Complete editorial work first

Finish structural revision, copyediting and proofreading before final pagination. Late sentence changes can move pages, alter chapter starts and invalidate the spine width. If print is new to you, read our paperback guide before choosing trim and paper.

Set up account, payment and tax details accurately

Use information that matches your legal and tax circumstances. Pen names can be part of public book metadata, but account and payment details serve different purposes. Seek qualified advice for business registration, tax or fixed-price rules that apply in your country.

Create metadata around reader decisions

Your title, subtitle, description, categories and search terms should agree with the cover and content. Write the description as sales copy for a human: establish the central conflict or outcome, clarify the reading experience and make the next step easy. Avoid repetitive keyword strings, unrelated trends and other authors' trademarks.

Understand the ISBN choice

Depending on edition and marketplace, you may be offered a free identifier or use one you own. Consider how the imprint is displayed and whether you plan broader distribution. Decide before release rather than trying to repair bibliographic data across several editions later.

Validate the interior file

For print, check trim size, embedded fonts, margins, image resolution, chapter openings, blank pages and page numbers. For ebooks, test the table of contents, paragraph behaviour, scene breaks and images on more than one screen size. A file that opens successfully is not automatically reader-ready.

Calculate the cover from the final book

The print wrap includes back, spine, front and bleed. Spine width comes from page count and selected paper. Generate a current template only after pagination has settled. See our cover workflow for design and preflight checks.

Use previews, then order a physical proof

Review every page in the digital preview and investigate every warning. A physical copy reveals issues a screen cannot: paper opacity, gutter comfort, colour shifts, cover alignment and type that feels too small. Build time for one correction round into the schedule.

Model price and earnings honestly

Start with list price, applicable taxes, print cost, marketplace terms and your expected royalty. Then consider advertising, editing and design costs. Our breakdown of author earnings per book helps separate revenue from profit.

Do not let publication be the marketing plan

Prepare your author page, mailing list, advance copies, sample and launch communication before pressing publish. Sustainable visibility grows from a system, not one launch-day post. Use the book-marketing guide to build that system.

A final pre-publication checklist

  • Edition settings match the uploaded interior.
  • The cover template uses the final page count and paper.
  • Metadata, cover and sample promise the same genre.
  • Every page and navigation link has been inspected.
  • A physical proof has been approved where practical.
  • Pricing and launch communication are ready.

Preparing the files in ManuBook

ManuBook connects the manuscript, book format, cover geometry and final exports in one workflow. KDP remains the publishing destination; ManuBook helps you arrive with consistent files that have been designed and checked as parts of the same edition.

Note: This article is general information, not legal, tax or financial advice. Always rely on current provider documentation and advice appropriate to your circumstances.

Treat KDP as a chain of controlled hand-offs

The upload page is not the production plan. Build a release packet containing one approved metadata sheet, one interior master, one provider-specific cover, one price model and one proof log. The packet prevents an easy but costly mistake: updating the subtitle in the listing while an older title remains on the cover or title page.

Use the proof as evidence. Record page number, defect category, repair and file version; “looks mostly fine” is not a repeatable quality-control result.

Free ISBN versus your own identifier

KDP currently offers a free ISBN for paperback and hardcover editions. Amazon states that it is restricted to KDP and carries the imprint “Independently published.” Your own ISBN can support distribution elsewhere, but the registered title, author and imprint details must match. Print formats need their own identifiers; a Kindle ebook can be published on KDP without an ISBN.

The official example that makes thresholds visible

KDP's US print-pricing example uses a 300-page black-ink paperback with $4.60 printing cost. At $9.99 and a 60% rate, the royalty is $1.39; at $9.98 and 50%, it is $0.39. Those are not universal numbers for every territory. Their lesson is to verify the live threshold and cost table for the marketplace where you are pricing.

Proof in three passes

  1. Mechanical: page order, blanks, trim, margins, headers, page numbers, bleed and spine.
  2. Optical: font darkness, image contrast, chapter-opening rhythm and consistency across spreads.
  3. Commercial: cover promise, back-cover copy, ISBN/barcode area, visible price information and metadata alignment.

KDP production questions

Can I skip a print proof if Previewer is clean?

You can technically publish, but you lose evidence about paper, physical contrast, trim variance, binding and reading comfort. A professional print release should budget for proofing.

Is the free ISBN always the economical choice?

It removes the purchase cost but also restricts that identifier to KDP and fixes the displayed imprint. Evaluate distribution control, not price alone.

Should ebook and print launch together?

Only if both files are genuinely ready. Coordinated formats can help readers, but delaying one clean edition is better than shipping two rushed ones.
